Kamloops Symphony Orchestra sends Spring Series inside local residences virtually

Symphony from home

From March 13 to May 22, Kamloops residents will be able to hear the symphony from the comforts of home.

The Kamloops Symphony announced a three part digital Spring Series of concerts; Sounds in Sand (March 13 to April 11), Charlie Parker with Strings (April 9 to May 8) and Voilà Viola (April 23 to May 22).

For Sounds in Sand, the symphony will have a visual aspect to it as well. Russian sand artists Marina and Eva Sosnina will contribute by crafting live, elegant artwork in sync with the music in an intercontinental collaboration.

“This mother-daughter duo will ‘paint' along to a 'modestly modern’ arrangement of Mussorgsky’s classic Pictures at an Exhibition for chamber orchestra and create a brand-new work along to Iranian Canadian composer Iman Habibi’s Radiant Light,” Ryan Noakes, marketing co-ordinator for the Kamloops Symphony, said in a press release.

“Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is the composer’s best-known work, musically depicting a walk through an art exhibit.”

The Sosnina’s will re-create the paintings that influenced the creation of the music at the same time as the performance.

Prokofiev’s Overture on Hebrew Themes will start off the program, which was considered a highly unusual instrumentation of string quartet, piano and clarinet.

The Kamloops Symphony will switch genres for Charlie Parker with Strings, along with jazz saxophonist Cory Weeds.

Marina Thibeault will be featured as a soloist, playing the viola concerto for the final part of this series, Voilà Viola.

Tickets are $15 per person, or $25 per household. Audiences can also purchase a three pack mini subscription to the entire Spring Series for $35 each or $60 per household.
