RCMP want parents to tell kids to stop jumping off Barriere-area train bridges

Don't jump off rail bridges

Barriere RCMP are asking area parents to talk to their children about how dangerous (and how it's illegal) to jump off rail bridges.

In particular they're concerned about people using the bridge in Barriere to jump into the North Thompson River, Cpl. Robert Welsman states in a release, but jumping off rail bridges and hanging out along rail lines in general are not a good idea.

Train tracks are private property, he adds. It's illegal to be on the tracks except at rail crossings. Fines can be levied or people can be arrested for those who don't follow the law.

"This can lead to unnecessary delays and stoppages of the rail system, and result in the deployment of front line Barriere RCMP officers to clear the tracks to ensure there are no persons on the bridge," Welsman writes in the release. "Pedestrians on the railway bridge can also be a source of stress for railway engineers and operators approaching the bridge, who may be unable to stop in time for a person or persons on the bridge."
