Kamloops friends hosting virtual Christmas dinner in April

Christmas in April

When Leanne Peniuk woke up to snow on Friday morning, it put her in a bad mood.

The Kamloops resident took a short video of the winter wonderland outside (with "Let It Snow!" playing in the background), and posted it to Facebook. Friend Kylye Holly saw the post and suggested they do a Christmas dinner on Sunday night and make it a Kamloops event.

The two got talking about the idea, and before they knew it, Holly had made up a graphic, inviting everyone and anyone to host their own Christmas dinner on April 5.

"We just thought it would be fun," says Peniuk during an interview with Castanet.

The spread doesn't have to be a turkey dinner with all the fixings, she adds. Whatever is in your freezer or fridge works: roast beef, lamb, chicken, ham, fish, or something vegetarian or vegan.

"Every day we've been wearing sweatpants and pajamas and not going out for dinner. This is a way to clean up, throw some makeup on, put on a nice pair of pants and actually get dressed for dinner," says Peniuk.

Holly tells Castanet a friend of hers did a Christmas dinner with her family last week.

"We just thought, wow, that's such a good idea," she says.

Anyone who participates tomorrow can post pictures of their dinner with the hashtag #ChristmasInKamloops. Inviting guests via Zoom or Skype or another teleconferencing app is also encouraged.

As an incentive to take part, Holly will be giving away a large Jenga set at random.

Christmas dinner is on from 5 to 8 p.m. Merry Christmas, Kamloops!
