Kamloops Symphony Orchestra on the hunt for new venue following closure of Sagebrush Theatre

Kamloops Symphony Orchestra (KSO) is looking for a backup venue following the temporary closure of the Sagebrush Theatre last week.

"We will come up with a plan and we will put on all our performances," says Kathy Humphreys, KSO's executive director. "Nothing is going to be cancelled. I will find a way to make it happen."

Sagebrush Theatre, which is co-owned by the school district and the City of Kamloops, is managed by Western Canada Theatre (WCT) and is home to WCT productions and the KSO.

On Feb. 15, WCT staff announced a routine technical setup had revealed a crack in a roof truss. Engineers determined the space was no longer safe for peformances and closed the theatre's doors until further notice.

Humphreys says she's been on a number of appointments today (Feb. 19), in search of an alternative venue. There are six KSO shows over the next three months that need to be relocated if the closure runs until the end of KSO's season.

"It boils down to churches because there's no place else that is a reasonable size and has a setup for an audience...or has a platform/stage at the front," she tells KamloopsMatters.

Factors like parking, a dressing room for the musicians and venue availability also make things tricky.

One of May performances includes the 55-person orchestra and a 100-person chorus.

The closure of Sagebrush Theatre is good example of why the City of Kamloops needs a peforming arts centre, adds Humphreys.

"It's pretty incredible there's only one place in the whole city that can house performances. That's not acceptable for a community of this size."

KSO has suspended single-ticket sales for all orchestra performances until a new venue is found. Humphreys says tickets to the two remaining chamber music concerts will be unaffected because those shows take place at The Rex Hall.

If anyone has any questions or concerns, they're asked to call the KSO office at 250-372-5000 and not the Kamloops Live! Box Office.
