Fire confined to single suite at Kamloops Travelodge

Motel fire suspicious

UPDATE: 12:30 p.m.

Kamloops RCMP says a motel room fire this morning is considered suspicious.

The fire broke out about 8 a.m. at the Kamloops Travelodge.

Witnesses smelled smoke and went to investigate, says RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie.

"That was when a man was seen leaving a second floor room. The man got into a pickup truck and drove away.  This man is believed to be the same man who was registered in the room. Hotel registration information is being investigated. However, at this time, the name and licence plate that the man supplied has not yielded a positive identification."

The man is described as Caucasian, in his mid 30s with facial hair. At the time he registered into the hotel, he was wearing a blue button down shirt and a red ball cap. When he was seen leaving the hotel room, he was wearing a grey sweater.  He was driving a black Ford pickup, partially lifted with an Alberta licence plate.  The truck had a broken left tail light.

Currently, the hotel room is being secured until fire investigators can enter.

Kamloops RCMP and fire prevention officers are investigating after a blaze this morning at the Travelodge in the city's Aberdeen area.

"There was a fire that was confined to a single suite," says KFR Capt. Wade Lindoff.

"We put the fire out and there was no extension to suites on either side or above."

Lindoff says crews are still on scene mopping up, and that RCMP are looking into the cause.
