Burning school a total loss

UPDATE: 9:35 p.m.

While Kamloops' Parkcrest Elementary continues to burn, crews now have the blaze under control.

"Right now, we are in a defensive mode. We are surrounding and drowning. We are putting out hot spots," Assistant Fire Chief Robb Schoular told Kamloops Matters.

"We are not going into the building, just due to the collapse hazards."

While the fire is under control, Schoular says the building is a total loss.

UPDATE: 9 p.m.

All available firefighters responded to the large fire at Kamloops' Parkcrest Elementary Thursday night, but the school continues to burn into the night.

The Kamloops Fire Department first received the call just after 5 p.m., and within minutes, the call was upgraded to a two-alarm fire and all possible resources were directed to the blaze. As of 8:35 p.m., more than 30 firefighters remain on scene and flames are still very visible.

"KFR crews are working hard to control the blaze and will be on-scene for the next several hours,” said Assistant Fire Chief, Steve Robinson. “We are requesting everyone to stay clear of the area.”

No one was injured in the fire, and the cause remains unclear at this time.

Students at the school have been advised to stay home Friday, and next week, while School District 73 and the City of Kamloops work to find a new location for students for the school year.

"The loss of Parkcrest Elementary School is devastating to the students of the school and the staff who worked in the building,” said Alison Sidow, SD 73 superintendent.

“We are working diligently to ensure the emotional well being and continuity of education of our students.”

UPDATE: 7:30 p.m.

Kamloops' Parkcrest Elementary is still on fire, two hours after the blaze began.

The Kamloops Fire Department has confirmed that no one has been injured, and crews remain on scene fighting the fire.

The City of Kamloops has reached out to School District 73 to try and find other facilities to help the children and teachers get back to school as soon as possible.
