Ignores flagger, gets in crash

UPDATE: noon

RCMP are shedding more light on a serious collision Sunday night on Westsyde Road.

Police say a Toyota Corolla was travelling south when it crossed the centre line and struck a northbound Hyundai Elantra. There was one person in the Toyota, two in the Hyundai. All were taken to hospital, and the passenger in the Hyundai has critical injuries, says Cpl. Jodi Shelkie.

Witnesses report that, just previous to the collision, the Toyota was driving erratically.

Impaired driving is believed to have been a contributing factor.

ORIGINAL: 6:30 a.m.

Westsyde Road in Kamloops was closed for several hours overnight after a driver failed to obey a flagger at a worksite and was involved in a collision.

RCMP first advised of the two-vehicle crash about 7:30 p.m., and traffic was detoured via Grasslands Boulevard.

Staff Sgt. Victor Steinhammer said the incident is still under investigation, and three people were taken to Royal Inland Hospital, two with serious injuries. All were Kamloops residents.

After ignoring the flagger, the vehicle was eventually stopped, and the driver was given a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition.

Police advised the road was reopened as of 4:30 a.m.

No other details of the crash were released.
