Freeze breaks water mains

City crews in Kamloops worked overnight to isolate a water main break off Columbia Street.

The break happened about 5 p.m. between Ponderosa Lodge and Front Counter BC, underneath a sidewalk.

Heavy frost hampered efforts Thursday night, the city says, making excavation difficult.

About 8:30 a.m. Friday, crews located the break and began removing and replacing the pipe.

As of mid-day, Glenfair Estates remained without water, and nearby BC Government offices were shut down for the day.

Overnight, water from the break flooded Columbia Street, 3rd and 4th avenues.

Crews remain on site to keep the roads as clear as possible.

Another water main break also happened on Greenstone Drive, between Bestwick Drive and Pyramid Court. Crews are currently at that scene, too.

About 20 homes in the area are affected, with periodic water service interruptions today.

The city says both breaks are likely the result of recent extreme weather. They are expected to be repaired by the end of the day.
