An elementary school teacher north of Kamloops has been stripped of his licence after exchanging “inappropriate messages” with young former students.
Bryan Edmund Cederholm was issued a teaching certificate in 2014, and two years later began teaching at a small elementary school about two hours north of Kamloops.
Cederholm had grown up in the small community, and attended the very same school when he was a child. He graduated high school in 2008 before attending Thompson Rivers University.
In a recent Consent Resolution Summary from B.C.'s Commissioner for Teacher Regulation, Cederholm agreed his actions during the 2016-17 school year constituted professional misconduct, and his teaching certification was cancelled.
The Kamloops/Thompson School District first made made a report to the commissioner in March 2017, relating to inappropriate messages Cederholm sent to a 12-year-old former student. Cederholm was reprimanded and suspended for two days without pay.
He had been warned by the district in early 2016 not to have “inappropriate contact with students,” but the ruling doesn't elaborate on the circumstances that led to that warning.
Less than a month after the first reprimand, the school district fired Cederholm after learning he had exchanged inappropriate messages through Instagram with a 14-year-old former student, before she blocked him.
The school district then learned Cederholm had also exchanged messages with a 16-year-old former student during the 2016-17 school year. The teen also blocked Cederholm on social media.
The following year, in January 2018, the district learned Cederholm had been communicating inappropriately with a 13-year-old former female student, between October 2016 and January 2017.
The nature of the "inappropriate messages" was never elaborated on in the ruling.
“Cederholm used multiple contact points with students, including some outside the classroom, which were used to blur boundaries,” the ruling states.
In addition to losing his teaching licence, Cederholm is also banned from ever reapplying for a licence.
