350 litres of diesel into river

More details are being released about a diesel spill into the North Thompson River last week that has left the small community of Vavenby without water.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District estimates about 350 litres of fuel in the tanks of a tractor trailer was released into the river, likely upon impact, when a truck crashed Sunday about 30 kilometres up river from Vavenby.

The truck and trailer have now been removed from the river, but a “do not use” notice remains in place for the Vavenby Community Water System.

The regional district took samples from the water system after the accident with results expected late Thursday or early Friday.

“The TNRD is working closely with Interior Health Authority, and it is anticipated that if the results show that the water system has not been contaminated, the do not use notice may be rescinded by Interior Health,” the regional district said Wednesday.

While under the notice, users are reminded that the water should not be used for anything but flushing toilets.

Free bottled water for drinking and bulk water for cooking, washing dishes is available to the water system users at the local fire department.

Vavenby residents were impacted by a similar advisory due to a crash in the same area back in January 2017.
