Smash-up derby

UPDATE 7:45 a.m.

RCMP in Kamloops no indicate a driver who went on a smash-up spree was also targeting at least five banks.

Police say the first 911 calls started coming in at about 8:30 p.m. as witnesses reported a pickup truck was backing up and smashing into several Kamloops businesses.

The truck fled and the driver also rammed a police cruiser that was trying to pull it over, before officers moved in.

The damage is still being tallied but a total of five banks were vandalized, no one was hurt.

A Kamloops driver is expected to appear in court today after being caught red-handed purposely driving into buildings on the holiday Monday.

Kamloops RCMP responded to numerous 911 calls just after 8:30 p.m. Monday. One caller reported that a vehicle had backed into the windows of a business located on Columbia Street, then fled the scene.

Calls kept coming in, reporting a similar pattern with the same vehicle smashing into other businesses.

RCMP managed to locate the vehicle in the downtown area but before the driver could be apprehended he smashed into the police cruiser in an attempt to flee. Officers managed to stop the vehicle and arrested a lone male driver, who was taken into custody.
 
Total damage caused by the driver of the vehicle is still being assessed as there were multiple locations.
