Driver collides with cop car

A suspected drunk driver gave Kamloops RCMP plenty of cause to check his sobriety.

At 6:10 a.m. Wednesday, an officer was driving an unmarked police car westbound on Columbia Street when he saw a vehicle driving ahead of him, also in the westbound lane, weaving and hitting the snowbank on the median.

Const. Jodi Shelkie said the suspect vehicle turned left at 3rd Avenue and proceeded to travel west on Columbia Street, but this time in the wrong lane.

“The police officer continued westbound in the correct lane. He activated his emergency lights, turned his unmarked police vehicle around into the eastbound lane and stopped in the far right lane in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The vehicle then struck the police car head on at a low speed,” said Shelkie.

The officer was not injured and the driver of the other car had minor injuries and was taken to a local medical facility.

“It is suspected that the driver was impaired. The investigation is ongoing,” said Shelkie.
