Layoffs at Afton Mine

Twenty-eight employees have been laid off at New Gold's New Afton mine near Kamloops.

Company spokesman Scott Davidson says the cuts at the gold, silver and copper mine are due to a reorganization, as well as the deferral of a section of the huge development.

Davidson can't say if the 28 workers will be hired back at a later date to rejoin the 410 people still employed at New Afton.

The layoffs follow a record year for the mine in 2017, as six million tonnes of ore were produced.
