Gas leak evacuates store

UPDATE: 11:15 a.m.

All lanes of Tranquille and Eighth Street in Kamloops are now open – to motorists only.

Pedestrians are still being diverted away from the area, police say.

ORIGINAL: 10:50 a.m.

A major Kamloops artery has been closed and a store evacuated due to a possible natural gas leak.

RCMP are redirecting traffic and pedestrians at the intersection of 8th Street and Tranquille Road.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the Penny Pinchers store "experienced a structural problem, and until it is confirmed that the natural gas lines were not compromised, traffic will be diverted from the area."

Fortis Gas crews have been called to the scene.
