Exchanging gunfire

UPDATE: 2:35 p.m.

A full 22 hours after the incident began, a Kamloops standoff ended peacefully Saturday morning.

Police were called to a North Shore home at 6 a.m. Friday for a report of an assault.

A search began for the suspect and police located the 35-year-old suspect at a different house on Nanaimo Street at 9:40 a.m. The suspect threatened police with a gun, and eventually fled the home.

A pursuit led police to the Mt. Paul industrial area, where the suspect began shooting at police, prompting police to return fire.

There were four separate exchanges of gunfire.

The suspect made his way to the G&M Trailer Park, where he barricaded himself in a trailer at 10:30 a.m.

Despite a Kelowna Emergency Response Team already assisting Kamloops RCMP with the incident, another ERT team from the Lower Mainland made their way to Kamloops to help.

The trailer park was evacuated and a negotiation began, which lasted for the next 17 hours.

“This was a prolonged negotiation that was very tense,” said Jodi Shelkie of the Kamloops RCMP. “On several occasions the suspect made explicit threats to police and discharged his rifle within the home.”

At 4 a.m. Saturday morning, the suspect surrendered without incident and was taken into custody.

The man, who was previously known to police, faces several serious charges.

Police believe no one was injured throughout the day's events.

UPDATE: 10:45 a.m.

A high-risk police operation at a trailer park in Kamloops, B.C., that shut down a nearby elementary school and businesses ended peacefully with one man arrested, RCMP said on Saturday.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said there was a significant police presence at the G & M Trailer Park on Friday, in an incident involving a suspect who was believed to be armed.

Police did not say whether the man was facing any charges.

Shelkie said the trailer park remained closed for a police investigation on Saturday, but surrounding streets were re-opened.

But the day before, mounties instructed parents not to pick up their children from a nearby elementary school. Instead, Shelkie said students would be bused to a local bridge where parents could pick them up.

Residents of the trailer park were told to remain inside and to lock their doors and windows.

Nicole Calver, a receptionist at the First Nations Tax Commission, said she heard sirens at about 11 a.m. Friday and looked out the window to see about 15 RCMP vehicles head into a trailer park across the street.

"That's where we saw the squad vehicle ram a green truck," she said. "We did hear, we did witness six gunshots and we saw people running around, I think a squad team ... running around the trailer park after that."

The nearby Sk'elep School of Excellence went into lockdown, Calver said, adding she heard the announcement from the school's speaker.

People in her office had been instructed to stay away from windows and not to go outside, she said.

Calver said she was listing to radio reports "to plan our routes home, if we can get out of here."

UPDATE: Saturday 5:50 a.m.

UPDATE: 2:29 p.m.

All students of Sk’elep School on Kamloops Indian Band Reserve will be leaving the school today at the regular time of 2:40 p.m., but according to police, parents are not to go to the school to pick up their children.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said students will be bused away from the school down Shuswap Road to the Lafarge Bridge.

If they wish, parents may pick up their children on the north side of Lafarge Bridge.

If parents choose not to, or cannot pick up their children at Lafarge, the children will be bused home as usual.

“However, due to Highway 5 being closed due to the police emergency happening, the buses could be up to one hour later than usual dropping the children off,” she said.

“Parents who normally pick their children up from the school but are not able to go to the Lafarge Bridge to get them, school staff will be with the students at all times and will make further arrangements for the students.”

There is no update in relation to the ongoing police incident in G&M Trailer Park.
