Fire 50% contained

A wildfire 12 kilometres west of Kamloops is 50 per cent contained.

Ground fire crews have made significant progress at Dew Drop and say there are no threats to public safety or structures at this time.

“The nearest structures are in the community of Frederick, approximately 5 km to the west,” says an updated release on the BC Wildfire Management webpage.

BC Wildfire Service had been performing a 25-hectare controlled burn in Lac du Bois Provincial Park near Dew Drop trail.

“The controlled burn was in modified response and began Friday, June 16. This fire suppression method was used in order to minimize the impact on this protected ecosystem,” says the release.

Wind on Monday combined with hot and dry conditions caused the fire to breach its original prescribed boundary and it was upgraded from a modified response to a full response.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but is suspected to be human caused.

The blaze was 156 hectares in size, more than doubling an original 75 hectares since it was discovered on June 16.

Ninety firefighters worked on the fire Wednesday. Two water tenders were on site.
