Making a pass on Hwy 5

Construction will start this spring on new passing lanes on Highway 5 north of Kamloops.

The lanes will be located between Barriere and Little Fort, near Darfield.

"Preconstruction work like brushing, fencing and tree clearing is currently underway and will be completed by the end of April," said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone.

"A new three-kilometre southbound passing lane will be added and the existing northbound passing lane will be extended by 2.7 kilometres, providing safer opportunities for motorists to pass and improving traffic flow."

The project is expected to be finished in the fall of 2018 and is tendered on BC Bid.

"The Yellowhead Highway is a popular route for commercial and recreation vehicles," said MLA for Kamloops-North Thompson Terry Lake.

"That's why, as part of B.C. on the Move, we committed to improving this stretch and adding safety features like guardrails, new passing lanes and resurfacing many sections of Highway 5."
