Distracted drivers nabbed

Kamloops drivers aren't getting the message.

The local RCMP detachment handed out 41 distracted driving violation tickets in the city during the month of March, says Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Cheryl Bush.

The Integrated Road Safety Unit and Central Interior Traffic Services issued 122 tickets for the same thing on highways in and around the city.

Bush says police warned drivers at the beginning of the month they would be be focusing on distracted drivers and speed in school zones. But it didn't make much difference.

"It was highly publicized that there would be some enforcement in the school zones," said Bush. "The traffic unit upheld their end of the bargain, but drivers didn’t slow down."

During the two weeks before spring break, 41 tickets were issued for speeding in school zones.
