Trades event focuses on kids

Students from Grade 6 to 12 will be showcased this week at Thompson Rivers University during a regional trades skills competition.

The Friday event is designed to give students an opportunity to explore potential careers in skilled trades and technologies.

Secondary school students compete in a variety of skills competitions, while those in the lower grades compete in a series of junior skills competitions designed for their skill level.

The Industry Training Authority, an agency of the B.C. government, provided $200,000 into Skills BC to hold 13 regional competitions across the province, culminating in a provincial competition.

“Our government is focused on giving young people all the tools and knowledge they need to chart their course to a prosperous future,” said Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone. “These events are a prime example of how we are doing that.”

Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Terry Lake said, “We are investing in B.C.’s future while inspiring young people to find their niche in what promises to be a very competitive skills market. Hands-on competitions such as this give students a head start in their career search.”

“ITA is proud to support Skills BC and to build on our focus of awakening interest in the trades in youth,” said Gary Herman, Industry Training Authority CEO. “These regional competitions are an amazing and unique opportunity for our talented tradespeople to show off their skills, and are also a way to celebrate and reward students for their mastery in a chosen trade.”
