It's all about...motivation

Last week I introduced our inspirational project Codex Moments to you.
Today I wanted to talk a little about why we chose to initiate the project and what the difference is between motivation and inspiration.
As I mentioned last week, as a Canadian Keynote Speaker I engage with audiences after an event. One of the most common comments I get after a talk is “that was incredibly inspirational”. The comment has always made me think about why somebody would go to a convention time after time, to hear the same speaker and leave with the same level of inspiration each time?
The reason, I believe is because we are not motivated enough to do something for ourselves.
I had the perfect example this week where I started thinking about the fact I have not been running and training as much as I should. It is because I have not been inspired to do so. Many of you who know me a little, understand that big projects inspire me. So training to stay fit - while it is cool, important and necessary, is not inspiring.
So I decided I would give myself the inspiration to train. I have picked one of the top 10 marathons in the world to run in, the Lewa marathon in Kenya. In fact, so far, because of my decision, I have been able to inspire a few more people to join me.
The inspiration for me is two fold. Firstly, it is one of the most scenic (and challenging) marathons that you could participate in. Secondly it is in a region where our Canadian Charity operates, providing safe water to villagers in the Samburu area.
So that is the inspiration. It is an inanimate goal… a wish, even a dream. But it inspires me enough to be motivated to train. It is, if you like, my reward for training. Those of you who have never run much would probably not understand and I get it, but for me that makes me want to be fit, and able to compete.
So why do we seek inspiration from others? Because we have forgotten how to dream. It is quite simple. We lack the ability to dream and so we desire to share in others dreams or passions so that we ourselves may be able to find motivation to finally do something.
That is exactly how I have been with running. My training has been lacklustre to say the least.
So our Codex project is designed for you to initiate a book of “dreams”. You can enter people you would like to meet, things we want to do, places we want to go. Our goal is to support and assist you with training videos, examples of what we have been able to accomplish using our Codex… what exactly are our Codex Moments. In that way, you can walk around with your Codex, which people will find inspirational. When we are inspired, we are compelled to action - that is motivation. So our inspired friends, family and colleagues will be motivated to assist you occasionally and so begins the process of accomplishing achievements.
Motivation is simple, it is the action that is “inspired” by a vision. Sounds like faith doesn’t it?
