It's all about...connections

Perhaps when you get to my age, the lure of “networking” loses its shine.

As a keynote speaker, I am able to travel to speak at various events and you see the power of networking in play right before your eyes!

One of the things I dislike about networking is the self centered focus that is necessary for most people to achieve their results. I have always wondered if you reversed the approach at an event, and asked somebody how you could help them instead of jamming a card in their hands and asking if they needed a new widget that you happen to sell, what might happen.

It probably was more like an approach I used years ago and the good thing is that I still have solid relationships from the networking so many years ago.

Today I am in Kananaskis Country - my old stomping grounds and just had a photo taken of two friends and myself after more than twenty years of not having seen each other. It was a cool moment in time.

At the same time, it means that I am able to help people with connections to somebody who may be able to help them. That is also cool, an economic match maker!

I think for all of us, the depth of a relationship is more important than the number of relationships. It allows us to create connections on many different levels that benefit all parties rather than simply allowing us to sell a widget!

At your next networking event, be brave, reach out your hand and ask a stranger what you could do to help them!
