Rotating Power Outages

Aquila says it might be forced to launch rotating outages unless electricity consumption as the result of this cold snap is not reduced immediately. The warning was issued early Monday afternoon because the "electricity system has been pushed to its limit and customers are facing rotating outages unless consumption is reduced." The company says electricity consumption hit a record high last Sunday. Aquila says the most crucial times in reducing power consumption are between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. and is asking its customers to take some steps to help. That includes turning down the thermostat 3-4 degrees until 8 p.m., turning off lights in rooms that are not in use, and waiting until after 8 p.m. when using appliances that are power gluttons including ovens, dishwashers and clothes dryers. Aquila supplies power to more than 500,000 customers in B.C. and Alberta. Meanwhile, The Kelowna Gospel Mission is appealing to the public for help during this cold snap. The facility is nearing full capacity and is asking for warm clothing for those in need. That includes blankets, mitts, gloves, toques and socks. Any donated items can be dropped at 259 Leon, which is between Water and Abbott.
