New participants needed

“We want to invite the public to come learn more about this event and the cause behind it,” says event director Derek Fuhr. “We have many loyal supporters who come out every year and we are truly grateful to them. This year we want to extend our reach in a big way by urging those who haven’t participated before, to come find out what motionball Marathon of Sport is all about.”

Organizations who are looking for a fun new team-building event, or individuals who want to meet new people while making an impact, would benefit from participating.

“If you ask anyone who has participated in the past, this event really is a lot of fun,” says Fuhr. “It is basically a full day of multi-sport and is purely recreational and social. You do not need to be ‘good at sports’ to join in.”

motionball Kelowna – presented by Kelowna Toyota – is hosting an information night for current and interested team captains at 7 p.m. on August 28 at Accelerate Okanagan – located in the Kelowna Innovation Centre. Anyone who wants to learn more is invited. Registration is required to attend the event. Those interested can email [email protected] to RSVP.

This year’s motionball Marathon of Sport event is set to take place at City Park on Saturday, September 21, 2019. It runs from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with opening and closing ceremonies and a beer garden after the event. Food and drinks are sponsored by Molson, Volcanic Wines, Pita Pit, Waterfront Cafe, Grimm’s Fine Foods, and more.

The Special Olympics movement provides opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to be a part of a community and overcome challenges they never thought possible. Programs across Canada help build resilience, confidence, and problem solving skills, which make a difference in all aspects of the athletes’ lives, including their likelihood to work.
