Finding a job isn't always easy; especially for those who are new to the workforce. And for those who aren’t computer savvy, entering the employment market can be an even bigger challenge.
A donation from the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation just made it possible for more at-risk youth to increase their computer skills and digital literacy through the purchase of laptops for the YMCA Youth Works Employment Program.
YMCA Youth Works is a 4-week employment and life skills program designed to assist at-risk youth to reach their employment and/or education goals and ultimately financial independence.
“At TELUS we give where we live – in the same communities where many youth are challenged by social and economic barriers, and we believe we have a responsibility to help address these challenges,” says Steve Jenkins, General Manager, TELUS Home Team and TELUS Thompson Okanagan Community Board Vice Chair. “I’m proud to share that the YMCA Okanagan’s Youth Works program is one of the first initiatives to receive funding support from the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation, which was created last year to support projects that connect youth to the technology, people and educational opportunities they need to reach their full potential. With this new funding, Youth Works can help even more local youth learn online, create resumes, and search for jobs.”
The YMCA of Okanagan offers a variety of employment programs geared to helping young adults find sustainable employment. Programs vary in length and include a mix of components including career assessments, skills upgrades, interview and networking experience and often match employees with employers in the industries they desire to work in.
