10th Annual Swing For Kids

The Agur Lake Camp Society is pleased to announce Summerland Timber Mart as the presenting sponsor of the 10th Annual Swing For Kids Charity Golf Tournament. The FUNdraising event will be held on May 26, 2018, hosted by the Summerland Golf & Country Club.

Ken Sewell of Summerland Timber Mart said: “Agur Lake Camp is the only barrier-free, wheelchair accessible wilderness camp for special needs children and adults in the entire province!  We have been a part of it since Summerland’s Bonnar Dowler first envisioned the camp.  We are excited to take on the role of Presenting Sponsor for this year’s “Swing For Kids”. We look forward to seeing all our friends, partners, and customers at this fantastic event.”

President of the Agur Lake Camp Society, Beth Bonten stated: “Ken, like his father Art Sewell before him, has always been community-orientated.  Summerland Timber Mart has been an invaluable support and supplier to our camp and to the community in general.  The camp couldn’t have grown as far and as fast as we have without the generosity and the care of Ken and his team.  We have a lot to be grateful for.”

This 10th annual golf tournament has become a local tradition and like Agur Lake Camp, the fundraising event is now attracting participants from throughout the Okanagan. It combines a wonderful day of golf, along with an evening banquet that includes live and silent auctions to raise funds for the Agur Lake Camp Society.  The funds will be used to operate and enhance their barrier-free wilderness camp for individuals with special needs and their caregivers.

Agur Lake Camp is the only barrier free camp of its kind in B.C.

Agur Lake Camp is located 20 km west of Summerland and is fully wheelchair accessible. The camp hosts wide variety of guests from around BC, including special needs children and immobile seniors, along with their families.  Offering fully furnished as well as fully accessible cabins (equipped with adjustable hospital beds, portable lifts and roll-in showers) as well as dry RV sites, fishing docks, a communal fire pit & picnic pavilion and outdoor washroom, all surrounded by paved trails so that every camper, regardless of their level of mobility or special need, can enjoy nature and the outdoor experience.

About Agur Lake Camp Society
The story of Agur Lake Camp started over 30 years ago, when Bonnar Dowler vowed to establish a camp for children with special needs and their families after his son was born with a severely malformed heart. Attending to their child with so many special needs was challenging at a time when there was no community support or counselling available to help them or give them time to nourish their own well- being.  The Society was formed in 2004 and incorporated in 2007 as a registered non-profit society.  Since then, a camp was forged out of the wilderness with in-kind equipment and even by hand from some dedicated and committed volunteers.  July 2013 Agur Lake Camp welcomed their first campers.

Today, the Board of Directors is continuing to develop the camp for future generations. This camp is more than land and buildings and no one appreciates that more than Amanda Lewis. She is both a guest who uses a wheelchair and a past member of the Society’s Board of Directors.  To quote Lewis, “Agur Lake Camp is a place that will cater to the whole family as opposed to just the individual.  That makes us unique.  I think that is valuable because families are much stronger and happier when they can stay together.”
