Walk for hope this Sunday

The biggest fund-raising initiative in Canada dedicated to ovarian cancer is being held this Sunday September, 7.

The Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope will take place here in Kelowna along the Mission Creek Greenway, with registration opening at 9 a.m. and the walk starting at 10 a.m until 11a.m.

Organizer, Cathy Farrow says ovarian cancer is the most fatal women’s cancer and 2,600 women are diagnosed every year.

Without an early detection test for the disease and with signs and symptoms that can be vague and often misdiagnosed, ovarian cancer is not found until late stages. A women diagnosed has a five year survival rate of less than 30 per cent.

“Yet when ovarian cancer is detected early, survival rates increase to 90 per cent,” says Farrow.

“The Walk not only raises vital funds for ovarian cancer awareness, support for women and their families and research, it enlivens communities across Canada to participate in a grassroots women’s health awareness campaign.”

So far in Canada the initiative has raised 47 per cent of the $2.8 million goal.
