Spring 2012 hair fashion

The beauty of the industry that I am so fortunate to work in is that nothing stays the same, as style is continually evolving and moving forward.  Seasons depict the looks that we see grace the runway: hair and makeup are used as accents to fashion designers to compliment the looks of the season.  There is always a method to the madness when a look is chosen, although it may seem random and at whim.

For Spring 2012 the direction of fashion is really impacted by the current economic state of the world.  As global financial frivolity has come under the microscope, clothing, jewellery and hair have become more classic still with a polished feel,  meaning that we are seeing far less of seasonal embellishments and higher quality finishing that will last, so that garments can be used again rather than discarded.

Even when we look to trend setters at the Oscars this past year jewellery was very low key (if worn at all) and the show was stolen by simple accents of high quality.  This rings true to me with Gwyneth Paltrow who stole the show with her Tom Ford cape worn with a simple voluminous low ponytail.  The only piece of jewellery she wore was a cuff bracelet, barely seen in many photos.

Interior design has followed suit with the latest in trend.  Designers are opting to choose pallets that are subdued, utilizing natural fibres such as wood and stone to create urban warmth.  Again, the use of high quality has not been compromised however the pieces chosen are timeless without boasting extreme extravagance.

In the salon all of these aspects ring true when we view the latest in collections from our artistic teams in Paris and Montreal.  When it comes to colour pallets, they have been kept simple with yet again, very little high contrasting colours and more tone on tone that melt into each other.  Soft tones like caramel melting into honey and deep plum melting into soft violet.  Less is more when it comes to contrast, avoiding ‘chunky’ placements.

Haircutting is all about using hair as a fabric and working with the texture you naturally have.  Layers are being grown out of long lengths and short is still super sexy.  Flat irons are being used as a texture tool, meaning that they are used to create wave, curl or smooth only the ends.  The best way to describe the current style looks is: simple luxury.  Perfect hair that can be duplicated by you without fighting the hair you have been given.

Trends are simply a guide of what is new and fresh on the market.  It is important for you to do your own research online and in magazines to find looks that you find striking. Two brains are always better then one in a professional consultation and the more you know about style trends that you like the better.  Photos are the perfect communication aide for you to relay your message to your stylist.
