The Juno awards were held in Winnipeg last night. A huge congratulations to our own Greg Sczebel. Greg won the Contemporary Christian Juno award last night. From the moment you first hear his jazzy piano rhythms, soulful vocals and insanely hooky lyrics, you’re sure to be intrigued. Greg Sczebel’s debut “Here to Stay” was the #1 selling album by an independent artist in Canadian Christian retailers for 2004. As you might recall, Greg and his Dad were without plane tickets to the Juno awards after Jetsgo went under. 101-5 SILK FM contacted Westjet, who kindly donated two trips to Winnipeg for Greg and his Dad.
Elsewhere at the Junos, winners included Avril Lavigne, Green Day, Sum 41, Billy Talent and Bob Rock. Lavigne won the Fan Choice Award as well as Artist of the Year and Pop Album of the Year. Green Day's American Idiot was named International Album of the Year. Billy Talent won Album of the Year and Group of The Year. Sum 41 won Rock Album of the Year. Bob Rock was named Producer of the Year for his work with Simple Plan and Metallica.
There was no goodness for moviegoers as they headed to Sin City in droves over the weekend. The latest comic book-turned-film earned $28.1-million dollars. Meanwhile, the other new film of the week, Beauty Shop, took second place with $13.5-million from Friday to Sunday. The Queen Latifah film, which opened last Wednesday, grossed a total of $17.3-million. Meanwhile, Guess Who, last week's top film, dropped to third place with a take of $13-million.
Filming got underway in Toronto last week on a new made-for-TV movie about Martha Stewart. Cybill Sheperd, who starred in NBC's 2003 movie about the domestic diva, is back in the lead role, but this time it's for CBS. A producer tells The New York Post the movie doesn't have a title yet, but covers the time from when Martha's company went public to her release from prison. The Post says the movie is on a fast track to air in May.
