Neil Young leaves Spotify over Joe Rogan podcast

Neil Young leaves Spotify

Spotify is removing the music of Canadian rock icon Neil Young from its streaming service in response to demands from the musician.

Young declared he was leaving the platform over vaccine misinformation spread on the Joe Rogan podcast, which Spotify exclusively distributes.

“They can have Rogan or Young. Not both,” Young said in an open letter.

“I am doing this because Spotify is spreading fake information about vaccines – potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them. Please act on this immediately today and keep me informed of the time schedule.”

Spotify announced Wednesday it has started removing Young’s catalog of music.

“We want all the world’s music and audio content to be available to Spotify users. With that comes great responsibility in balancing both safety for listeners and freedom for creators. We have detailed content policies in place and we’ve removed over 20,000 podcast episodes related to Covid since the start of the pandemic. We regret Neil’s decision to remove his music from Spotify, but hope to welcome him back soon,” Spotify said in a statement.

The Joe Rogan show is the most listened to podcast in the world, but has been under heavy criticism from experts for spreading vaccine misinformation.
