Devastated Alec Baldwin defends Rust crew amid reports of on-set chaos

Baldwin defends Rust crew

Alec Baldwin has disputed reports suggesting the set of Rust was disorganized and chaotic, calling his crew "very, very well-oiled".

The actor is still reeling from an on-set accident, which claimed the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. In his first on-camera interview since the tragedy, Alec insists her death was a "one in a trillion episode".

The Cooler star accidentally shot the cinematographer with a prop gun on the Santa Fe, New Mexico set, and in a new video obtained by TMZ, he says, "I'm not allowed to make any comments because it's an ongoing investigation. I've been ordered by the Sherriff's Department in Santa Fe. I can't answer any questions about the investigation. I can't. It's an active investigation in terms of a woman died."

Alec, who was also a producer of the movie, added: "She (Hutchins) was my friend. The day I arrived in Santa Fe to start shooting I took her to dinner with Joel, the director. We were a very, very well-oiled crew shooting a film together, and then this horrible event happened."

Baldwin revealed Hutchins' husband, Matthew, is still in a state of shock, and he is also trying to offer his support.

"The guy is overwhelmed with grief," the actor said. "There are incidental accidents on film sets from time to time, but nothing like this. This is a one in a trillion episode. It's a one in a trillion event. He's in shock. He has a nine-year-old son. We are in constant contact with them, because we're very worried about his family, his kid."

The actor also hopes the tragic accident will prompt change, adding, "Remember, how many bullets have been fired in films and TV shows in the last 75 years... And nearly all of it, without incident. So what has to happen now is, we have to realize that when it does go wrong and it's this horrible, catastrophic thing, some new measures have to take place."

Meanwhile, Baldwin's wife, Hilaria has broken her silence about the Rust film set tragedy, telling the New York Post she took the couple's six children off on a road trip after hearing the news.

"I didn't know where I was going, I just drove," she told the publication. "I just drove around and around and around with my kids... I drove around for an entire day trying to find a place."

They eventually settled on Manchester, Vermont, where Alec later joined them.

She now worries for her husband's mental health, following the on-set shooting tragedy, telling the Post, "I brought (Alec) up here because we have to mourn Halyna's death. Alec had a really traumatic thing happen, and I am trying to limit the PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).

"You look at what happens to soldiers and police officers when something like this happens; it's traumatic. We just came up here for quiet."

"He (Baldwin) needs space for me to take care of him and his mental health. It's an awful thing that happened. Alec feels awful. There's going to be no answers until we hear the results of the investigation. We don't know what happened, and we have the same questions as everyone does. We want answers faster than anyone. We have to have respect for the process of the authorities.

"Alec has done movies with guns for 40 years. Nothing like this has ever happened. There should be zero probability of that ever happening."
