Shang-Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings shatters expectations at U.S. box office

Shang-Chi beats predictions

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has opened with an impressive $71.4 million over the Labor Day weekend in the U.S (03-05Sep21).

The film is set to rack up $83.5 million over the four-day holiday weekend, eclipsing early projections of a $50 million opening haul in America.

It's the second best U.S. debut during the COVID pandemic, after Black Widow's $80.3 million opening in July (21). Unlike the Scarlett Johansson film, the latest epic from Marvel bosses was not available on streaming services, but only played on cinema big screens.

The first Asian-led Marvel film also set a new record for movie openings over the Labor Day weekend, beating 2007's Halloween.

Simu Liu stars as the action film's title character, with Hong Kong veteran actor Tony Leung as his father.

The movie co-stars Awkwafina and Michelle Yeoh and was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, whose previous films include the Michael B. Jordan legal drama Just Mercy.

Last weekend's box office champion, horror film Candyman, pulled in an estimated $10.5 million over the three-day weekend.

Free Guy, the Ryan Reynolds action-adventure comedy, earned an estimated $8.7 million between Friday and Sunday for the third spot, according to Variety.
