Tom and Rita back in U.S.

Tom Hanks shared a health update with fans after he and wife Rita Wilson returned to the U.S. on Friday.

The actors both tested positive for COVID-19 while in Australia earlier this month, when Hanks was preparing to start work on director Baz Luhrmann's upcoming Elvis Presley film, in which the Oscar winner is portraying Colonel Tom Parker.

They were briefly hospitalized for treatment for the flu-like illness, before going into quarantine in a local rental property.

After returning home to Los Angeles on Friday, the 63-year-old actor took to Twitter to tell fans the pair, both 63, were "home now and social distancing" amid the global health crisis.

"Hey, Folks. We're home now and, like the rest of America, we carry on with sheltering in place and social distancing," he penned. "Many, many thanks to everyone in Australia who looked after us."

"Their care and guidance made possible our return to the USA. And many thanks to all of you who reached out with well wishes. Rita and I so appreciate it. Hanx."

Hanks and Wilson were the first big celebrities to go public with their coronavirus diagnosis. Idris Elba, Olga Kurylenko, Placido Domingo, Jackson Browne, British royal Prince Charles, and U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson have since also tested positive for COVID-19.
