Legendary superhero Spider-Man shattered box office records when he revisited theaters during the US holiday weekend. The highly anticipated Spider-Man 2 pulled in a record 180.1-million dollars in its first six days at the box office, soaring well beyond the previous best six-day opening of 146.7-million dollars set last year by The Matrix Reloaded. Last weekend's top film, Michael Moore's controversial Fahrenheit 9/11, fell to second place with $21 million.
Madonna has canceled a show in Portugal after a dispute with a church in that country. According to Portuguese media, Madonna was planning to perform in Lisbon on September 12th -- it would've been her first ever concert in Portugal. But after the show was booked, a church in Lisbon claimed that they had already reserved the grounds of the concert venue for a convention at the same time. Despite pleas from fans and a cash offer from the concert promoters, the church refused to change its plans. A founder of the church told a local paper last month that he was, quote, "revolted by those who want to exchange Jesus for Madonna."
Mary-Kate Olsen ain't got milk. The troubled teen superstar signed on for the milk-mustache" campaign with her sister Ashley in May, saying, "We want to make sure our fans are healthy like us." Following news that Mary-Kate has anorexia, the ads have now been canceled "out of sensitivity for her situation". Claims in the Star and National Enquirer that Mary-Kate is also battling cocaine addiction — which her reps vehemently deny — no doubt also detracted from the advisability of showing the girls with a white substance on their upper lips.
Big Brother is back. The popular reality series where 13 strangers live together in a house while television audiences watch their every move, returns to CBS tonight. In a live ballot each Thursday, the houseguests will vote one of their own out of the house. The last one remaining will win $500,000. This season, there's a new twist -- some of the houseguests are related to one another but do not know it.
