Game of Thrones wraps up

Actress Emilia Clarke has shared a heartfelt farewell to her TV hit Game of Thrones after wrapping filming on the eighth and final season.

The Brit has been portraying Mother of Dragons Daenerys Targaryen since the cult fantasy drama launched in 2011, and she recently completed shooting her scenes for the last episodes, which will premiere next year.

Over the weekend, Emilia decided to return to the set in Ireland to take in the sights one more time, and she posted her emotional goodbye on Instagram.

"Hopped on a boat to an island to say goodbye to the land that has been my home away from home for almost a decade," she wrote beside a photo of herself lying in a field of flowers.

"It's been a trip @gameofthrones thank you for the life I never dreamed I'd be able to live and the family I'll never stop missing".

She ended the note with an emoji of a broken heart.

Emilia's touching caption drew emotional responses from her TV co-stars, both past and present.

Jason Momoa, who played her onscreen husband Khal Drogo, commented, "Love u (sic). Proud of you," while Lena Headey, who portrayed cunning Cersei Lannister, remarked, "Sweet words. Love you and HOLY Balls. #Thistheend".

"It's been the best. Ever. And you've been incredible," added John Bradley, known for his role as Samwell Tarly.

Emilia has been teasing fans about the final episodes of Game of Thrones in recent weeks, and admitted shooting the closing scenes really left their mark on her.

"It f***ed me up," she told Vanity Fair last month. "Knowing that is going to be a lasting flavor in someone's mouth of what Daenerys is... I'm doing all this weird s**t. You'll know what I mean when you see it."

However, the actress insisted she has no idea how the series officially ends, because show bosses David Benioff and D. B. Weiss made the cast shoot various alternate endings to avoid plot leaks.

"I think they're filming a bunch of stuff and they're not telling us," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "I'm being serious. I'm being deadly serious. I think that they don't even trust us. There's lots of different endings that could happen; I think we're doing all of them and we aren't being told which is actually what's going to happen."
