Remains found not human

Update -- April 15, 10:30 a.m.

Sgt. Rob Vermeulen has now confirmed it was the partial skeletal remains of a bear.

Update -- April 14, 2 p.m.

Sgt. Rob Vermeulen of the BCRCMP has now backtracked off his previous statement, after a further forensic investigation determined the remains found were not human.

West Kelowna RCMP received information on Friday about possible human remains in an area off Trepanier Road near Peachland.

"After further forensic investigation we can now confirm the remains are not human and our file has concluded," Vermeulen stated in a release issued Monday afternoon.


Police are investigating after human remains were found off a back road near Peachland.

On Friday, April 11th, the West Kelowna RCMP received information from a person who believed they may have come across human remains.  

The individual had been out walking their dog in an area off of Trepanier Road when the discovery was made.

According to RCMP Sgt. Rob Vermeulen, police have now confirmed that the remains are human and foul play is suspected in the person’s death.

Police are working in consultation with the BC Coroners Service to determine the identity, age, ethnicity, and gender of the victim.

The Southeast District Major Crime Unit has assumed control of the investigation.
