Small earthquake shakes Banff, Alta.; no damage reported

Earthquake rattles Banff

A small earthquake rattled Banff Saturday evening, but no damage was caused.

The 3.9-magnitude quake hit near Banff just after 6:30 p.m. MST, and Natural Resources Canada says it was “lightly felt” in the popular mountain town.

“There are no reports of damage, and none would be expected,” Natural Resources Canada wrote online.

The Town of Banff posted to Twitter that the quake was felt for "a few seconds."

“Everybody felt it man, it went right through the whole town!” Tom, a bartender at St. James Gate, told CTV News.

“That was the first thing that everyone looked for, that a truck hit the building.”

While the United States Geological Survey initially recorded the quake at a 4.4 magnitude, Natural Resources Canada later said it was smaller than first reported.
