The Government of Canada has announced Canadian passport services will be resuming by mail and by appointment for those travelling in less than 30 days.
Starting today, Canadians have the option to apply for a passport through mail. If someone requires a passport immediately or they plan to travel in less than 30 days and they have proof of travel, they can request an in-person appointment.
The Government of Canada is asking Canadians who don't have travel plans to wait before applying for a new passport as processing times are expected to take longer due to the high demand and COVID-19 measures.
“Resuming Canadian passport services by mail and expanding in-person appointments for those who need a passport in less than 30 days is a significant first step toward resuming regular passport services in Canada, while prioritizing the health and safety of Canadians and our employees," says Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Marco E. L. Mendicino.
"Travel advisories and restrictions remain in effect around the world, but we recognize that many Canadians need a passport for essential travel or to plan for the future and we are making every effort to help them access these services.”
Individuals who hope to renew their passport can now use a simplified renewal process which works within two years after the expiry date rather than one year if their passport expired on or after February 1, 2019. This allows those people more time to renew their passport if they aren't travelling soon.
This simplified process will give Canadians a shortened form without the need to resubmit their citizenship documents and guarantor declaration.
Refugee travel documents along and certificates of identity are still being processed on an urgent basis.
While local passport offices remain closed, Kelowna resident Tianna Rast had mailed her passport to Ottawa at the end of June to get it renewed. Frustrated with the fact that it was not being processed and it could not get mailed back to her, she reached out to Castanet this week to share her story.
