A man who strangled his wife and concealed her body in a wall of their Calgary home has been granted day parole.
Allan Shyback was convicted of manslaughter and causing an indignity to a body in the 2012 death of Lisa Mitchell.
He was originally sentenced to seven years in prison, but the Alberta Court of Appeal increased the term to 10 years.
Shyback told a Parole Board of Canada hearing at Bowden Institution in central Alberta that there's no excuse for what he did and he misses Mitchell every day.
Shyback testified at his trial that he endured years of domestic abuse by his wife and killed her in self-defence when she attacked him with a knife.
The board says Shyback will be eligible to move to a halfway house in nearby Red Deer, Alta., once space is found at the end of the month.
He will be required to follow a curfew, abstain from alcohol, attend programs and take counselling.
