A Montreal-area 14-year-old says he was kicked out of class today after wearing a jersey to show support for the victims of the crash involving the Humboldt Broncos.
Philippe Volek says he decided to wear a red and blue soccer shirt to his high school in Ste-Adele after hearing about a nationwide Jersey Day event to honour the 16 people killed in the Saskatchewan crash.
Volek says he was sent to the principal's office for violating the school's dress code and suspended for the day after refusing to remove the jersey.
A spokesman for the school board is confirming the incident, pointing out the jersey had nothing to do with the Broncos.
Bernard Dufourd says the school's administration will work with students to find a way to honour the victims.
Many schools and employers across Canada encouraged their workers to don sports jerseys today to show solidarity for the those who were affected by the tragedy.
