Found dead under snow

The Saskatchewan coroner's office is investigating the death of a girl who was found under snow in the backyard of her home.

Police and other first responders were called to a Regina home on Tuesday night and the 12-year-old was later pronounced dead in hospital.

"We are in the process of assisting the Office of the Chief Coroner in a death investigation," said a statement from Regina police spokeswoman Elizabeth Popowich.

"The deceased person is a 12-year old girl, who was found, unresponsive, in her family's backyard, in snow. At this point, there is little else to say about the case."

Regina Catholic Schools said the girl was a Grade 7 student at École St. Elizabeth School. The school has brought in grief counsellors to help students and staff.

Popowich said victim services staff are working with the family, which has asked for privacy at this time.

The principal of École St. Elizabeth School sent an email to parents informing them of the student’s death and the school’s response.

Police do not consider the death suspicious.
