Ski racer dead after crash

A 17-year-old German ski racer is dead after being severely injured during a race at Lake Louise.

Max Burkhart was racing in a Nor-Am Cup downhill race at the resort on Tuesday, when he crashed into safety netting.

Emergency crews responded immediately to the scene.

Burkhart was airlifted by STARS air ambulance to Calgary at about 2:30 p.m.

He succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Wednesday.

“On behalf of the Locke family and all of the staff at Lake Louise our deepest sympathies go out to Max's family, his teammates, and everyone else involved in the races,” said Lake Louise Ski Resort on Facebook.

A spokesperson for Alpine Canada said they are devastated about this tragic loss of life.

“Alpine Canada and Alberta Alpine encourage the ski family around the world to support the athlete's family and teammate through this difficult time,” said Alpine Canada.

Burkhart was a member of the Skiclub Partenkirchen of Germany.
