Avalanche season begins

The first avalanche of the year took place on Sunday in Kananaskis Country, Alberta.

The local Public Safety Section said it was a Size 1 and took place at Highwood Pass, Ptarmigan Cirque.

It was remotely triggered and was 20 to 30 centimetres deep, 30 metres wide and ran for 60 metres.

“The first avalanche of the year that has been reported to us!,” Kananaskis Country Public Safety Section posted on Facebook.

Avalanche Canada said early season conditions exist.

“Lower elevations are clear of snow, but higher elevations have enough snow to have avalanche problems,” states the website.
