Dr. Catherine Potvin is a world leader in the study of global change biology, and will give a talk titled  “Halting deforestation in the Tropics: One piece of the climate change mitigation puzzle”.

Early in her career she worked to disentangle the physiological consequences of elevated CO2 concentration on plant growth and biodiversity. Her current research focuses on tropical landscapes where her team is developing land use strategies that maximize carbon sequestration as a mitigation tool for climate change.

ROMANOWSKI LECTURE SERIES BACKGROUND
Begun in 2002, the Romanowski Lecture Series informs Canadians of recent advances in research and technology in the environmental sciences based on the lecturer’s particular knowledge and expertise. The lectures series is organized in exclusive collaboration with the Institutional Members of the Society.

Established in 1994, the RSC Miroslaw Romanowski Medal is awarded for significant contributions to the resolution of scientific aspects of environmental problems or for important improvements to the quality of an ecosystem in all aspects—terrestrial, atmospheric, aqueous—brought about by scientific means. The lecture tour will be delivered annually by the recipient of the Miroslaw Romanowski Medal.

OTHER STOPS IN THE SERIES TOUR
The series is stopping at six Canadian post secondary institutions: University of British Columbia, Ryerson University, Cape Breton University, Thompson Rivers University, l’Institut national de recherche scientifique (INRS), and the University of Windsor.
