Chamber Sets Priorities

Edited News Release

The Kelowna Chamber of Commerce’s priorities for 2005 were set during the Annual Board Retreat on Friday, December 10th.

The Chamber says it will focus its efforts in six main areas:

  • Transportation
  • Safety & Security
  • Downtown Revitalization
  • Enhancing membership value
  • Education
  • Tourism

"We have heard from our members through the member survey and these priorities are a direct result of our member feedback,” said 2005 Kelowna Chamber President, David MacLean. “We firmly believe that these are key issues facing the Kelowna business community in the coming year and will, therefore, ensure that we are actively engaged in them.”

“Our desire is to help grow Kelowna as a 'City of Stature' and see our work in these issues as a means to working towards that vision,” MacLean noted. “As well, we are going to continue to define what a City of Stature truly is, and how the Chamber can contribute to Kelowna's development as such. We have a very exciting year ahead of us. Our directors are envisioned and ready to contribute to the legacy of leadership the Chamber has provided this community for nearly 100 years."

At the first meeting of the 2005 Kelowna Chamber Board on November 30th, the Executive Vice President and three Vice Presidents were elected for the upcoming year. These four Vice Presidents will join 2005 President David MacLean of MacLean Group Marketing and Past President Ken Bessason of Pleiades Management Ltd. on the 2005 Executive Committee.

Kevin Crookes of Grant Thornton Chartered Accountants was elected Executive Vice President and will automatically become the 2006 President. Also elected as Vice Presidents were Cal McCarthy of SW Audio Visual/Showtime, James Paterson of Pushor Mitchell Lawyers and Laura Thurnheer of Community Futures Development Corporation of Central Okanagan. The Chamber Board can also select up to five Appointed Directors. These Appointees are currently being finalized and will be announced early in the New Year.

The Kelowna Chamber of Commerce is a business lobby group representing more than 1,550 businesses.
