Alitalia's Future

The future of Italian flagship carrier Alitalia is at stake in a meeting with unions Monday to reveal the number of planned job cuts as part of a restructuring plan aimed at averting collapse.

The plan is expected to include slashing about a third of 22,000 jobs, but Alitalia officials have refused to confirm the figure. Union approval of the recovery plan is crucial to the company's survival as it would allow Alitalia to access a $488 million US loan approved by the Italian government and the European Union.

Without the loan, Alitalia says it can pay salaries only until the end of this month.

At the meeting Monday afternoon, the state-run company will lay out its plan, hoping to persuade reluctant unions to go along with it.
