Manufacturing sales climb

Statistics Canada says manufacturing sales rose 1.4 per cent to $57.1 billion in March, with gains in 72 per cent of the industries monitored.

Economists had expected an increase of 1.2 per cent, according to Thomson Reuters Eikon.

A notable gain occurred in primary metal sales, up 4.2 per cent to $4.4 billion, with the largest gains from iron and steel mills, ferro-alloys and aluminum. Fabricated metal products rose 4.6 per cent to $3.3 billion.

Aerospace products and parts were up 10.6 per cent to $1.9 billion but motor vehicles fell 2.0 per cent to $5.2 billion.

Overall manufacturing sales in volume terms were up 0.6 per cent.
