West Kelowna Warriors won their seventh straight, dumping Vernon 5-1 Saturday

Warriors perfect weekend

The West Kelowna Warriors capped off a perfect weekend in style before the hometown crowd Saturday.

The Warriors got two goals from Damon Jugnauth during 5-1 victory before 750 fans at Royal LePage Place.

The win put an exclamation mark of string of three games in three nights, and ran their overall winning streak to seven.

They're also a perfect 5-0 on home ice to start the season.

"We were pretty proud of the guy's effort, especially in the second and third. I thought we stuck to our plan and executed well," said Warriors head coach Simon Ferguson.

"I think they had the same scenario as us, maybe worse...so that helped us a little bit as well. Again, we played our structure and used our brain as opposed to try to over complicate it."

While the Warriors played three in a row and had a bus trip from Wenatchee, the Vipers were playing three in four nights, which included a long trip from Prince George Friday night.

The Warriors got the jump on the Vipers early Saturday. Tyler Cristall ran his consecutive goal streak to eight games, beating Ethan David from down low after a sneaky backhand pass from John Evans from below the goal line.

The goal came seconds after a potential goal was disallowed after the puck slid into the net after the goal had been dislodged.

Riley Sharun doubled the lead midway through the first, beating David from a sharp angle near the goal line.

The Vipers carried much of the play the rest of the period, but could manage to get just one past Johnny Derrick, a power play tally from Reagan Milburn.

Derrick made several key saves the rest of the period with the Vipers buzzing all around him.

Damon Jugnauth gave the Warriors breathing room with his first two goals of the season in the second.

As was the case in the first, the Warriors hit the scoreboard in the opening minute when Jugnauth banged home a rebound for his first of the season.

He bagged his second six minutes later when he took a puck off the left wall and banged a one-timer past David.

Felix Trudeau improved his consecutive goal streak to six games with a one-timer just two seconds into their lone power play of the night.

The Warriors had chances for more on the night, but David stood tall turning aside breakaways from Trudeau, Carter Schmidt and Evans.

The Warriors got contributions from all four lines and the special teams again Saturday, something they've been getting on a consistent basis throughout the seven game winning streak.

"We are blessed with some good guys up and down our lineup, and still have some good players who are injured and out.

"That's what you want on a good team. Everyone has to buy into their role, and work toward that common goal."

Derrick turned aside 32 of 33 shots he faced to improve his record to a league-best 9-1.

The Warriors, a league-best 11-2 get a few days off before their toughest test of the young season, back-to-back games against the 9-1-1 Salmon Arm Silverbacks next Friday and Saturday, both in Salmon Arm.
