The Penticton Vees' take overtime win against the Wenatchee Wild

Overtime victory for Vees

The Penticton Vees triumphed with an overtime goal from Captain Fin Williams in a 3-2 victory over the Wenatchee Wild on Saturday night at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

The opening period saw both teams trying hard for the net but to no avail, as pucks hit post after post.

The Vees outshot the Wild by an 11-5 margin heading into the second period, but the Wenatchee team was the first to get on the scoreboard, with Jayden Price collected the first goal of the season for the Wild at the 10:53 mark.

That lead lasted just 12 seconds before Josh Nadeau picked up a loose puck and sent a shot over the glove shoulder of Wild goaltender Hank Levy to even the score at the 11:05 mark.

Each team collected nine shots in the second period before heading into the third, where the game remained even at 1-1.

The Wild wouldn't let tie that last long, earning their second lead of the game from Cade Littler, who grabbed a loose puck and sent a shot underneath the pads of Purcell for his first BCHL goal at the 3:38 mark.

The Vees picked up the pressure as the period went along and were able to even the score under ten minutes later, with Nadeau taking a pass from Williams at the front of the net and getting it past the blocker side for his second goal of the game.

With the score tied 2-2, the teams headed into overtime. Each team earned a point and played extra time for the first time this season. While both teams had strong chances to score, Williams gave the Vees their second win of the season.

Taking a loose puck into a breakaway from the blue line, Williams slipped the puck past the glove side of Levy for the game winning goal three minutes into the overtime frame, with the Vees taking a 3-2 victory.

Colin Purcell turned aside 19 of the 21 shots to earn his first career BCHL victory while Hank Levy stopped 30 of the 33 shots thrown his way in his first loss of the season.

The Vees will continue on their three-game home stand to begin the season as they host the Trail Smoke Eaters on Friday night at the SOEC. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. with tickets available online at valleyfirsttix.com as well as at the SOEC Box Office. The game will be broadcasted on Bounce 800 as well as HockeyTV.com beginning with the pre-game show at 6:40 p.m.
