Vees teddy bear toss success, team also sees a win

Teddies tossed, Vees victory

The crowd at Friday's Penticton Vees versus West Kelowna Warriors game didn't have to wait long for the annual Teddy Bear Toss to be triggered, just 47 seconds after the puck dropped.

Jackson Niedermayer scored at the South Okanagan Events Centre, and fans tossed stuffed animals and gently-used warm clothing items for charity onto the ice in celebration.

Once the items had been collected, overflowing in the back of a pickup truck, the game continued with more good news for the Vees.

Tristan Amonte made a great play below the goal line, taking a Warriors defender off the puck and centering a feed to the slot where Barnes was able to smack a shot past the blocker side of Baier for his 3rd goal of the season and a 2-0 Vees advantage before the 10-minute mark of the opening period.

A goal from the Warriors late in the first brought the game within one, but the second period saw Tyler Ho rack up two goals for a 4-1 lead.

Carson Kosobud finished the scoring in the final period with his second goal of the season, sealing a 5-1 victory for the Vees.

The Vees didn’t surrender much in the final period, or throughout the game, giving up just 18 shots. Yaniv Perets turned aside 17 of them for his 13th win of the season in the crease while Brock Baier of the Warriors made 40 saves on 45 shots thrown his way in his 11th defeat of the year.

The Vees (23-9-1-0) conclude their weekend home-and-home set against the West Kelowna Warriors (5-20-4-2) on Saturday night from Royal LePage Place.
