Warriors set for new season

The West Kelowna Warriors hope to put a season of off-ice turmoil behind them when they open up the 2019-2020 BC Hockey League season.

Last season included the resignation of head coach Rylan Ferster just prior to training, and then the firing of his replacement Geoff Grimwood on two occasions, a player revolt and two off-season lawsuits.

The lead up to this season has been a picnic in comparison.

"We have a really good group. They're focused. We have a younger group this year," said head coach Brandon West.

"We're trying to find our way right now with the injuries through exhibition. They're very honoured to put on this jersey."

The Warriors went 1-5 in the pre-season but, aside from a 9-1 blowout in Penticton, they were in each game.

However, due to injuries and roster battles, the team was never able to ice their complete opening night roster.

In fact, West says the club was only able to roster 12 forwards and six defencemen who are healthy as veteran forward Parm Dhaliwal and defemceman Garrett Ewert begin the season on the injured list.

West says it will be important for the remaining group to get off to a good start as the Warriors open with three games in just two-and-a-half days.

"It's going to be a grind. Some of our returning guys were surprised when they saw it, but they're excited about it, they want to get playing.

"They want to have a challenge right away."

It will be a challenge as the Warriors open tonight against the Vernon Vipers before welcoming in the Wenatchee Wild Saturday.

They close out the weekend Sunday afternoon in Salmon Arm. The game Sunday will be Salmon Arm's season opener.
